조계종 전국비구니회, 샤카디타코리아, 국제포교사회 등은 4월27일 용산구 한남동 주한 미얀마 대사관 앞에서 미얀마 민주평화 기원법회를 봉행하고 미얀마어, 영어로 각각 성명서를 발표했다.
성명서를 통해 스님과 불자들은 “자비를 실천하고 비폭력을 지향해야 하는 불교국가에서 군인을 앞세워 시위대를 공격하는 비참한 일이 일어나고 있는 것에 대해 통탄을 금지 못한다”며 “이것은 전 세계의 민주주의와 인권에 대한 도전”이라고 규탄했다.
이어 “대한민국은 민주화 항쟁을 통해 민주주의를 실현한 역사를 갖고 있는 나라로서 미얀마 민주항쟁에 더욱 공감하며 지지한다”며 “대한민국을 비롯하여 유엔에 가입한 모든 나라들은 미얀마의 사태를 수습하는데 지혜를 모아 협력하고 행동해 줄 것”을 촉구했다.
또 “전국비구니회와 여성불자들은 민주주의를 열망하는 미얀마 국민들을 위해 기도회를 개최할 것이고 민주주의가 실현되는 그날까지 미얀마 국민들과 함께 뜻을 함께 하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
미얀마 민주항쟁을 지지하는 성 명 서
지금 지구상에는 가장 슬프고 우려할만한 재앙이 일어나고 있다.
지난해 미얀마에서 11월 총선에 지지를 받지 못한 군부가 쿠데타를 일으켜 정권탈환의 야망을 드러내고 있고, 이에 맞서 투쟁하는 선량한 시민들은 무차별하게 희생당하고 있다. 이로 인해 그동안 부분적으로나마 민간정부에 의해 유지되어 온 민주주의가 다시 이전의 군사독재체재로 돌아가게 될 위기에 처해 있다.
더욱이 미얀마는 국민의 대다수인 89%가 불교를 종교로 가지고 있는 불교국가이다. 불교에서는 모든 생명체에는 부처의 성품이 있음을 가르치고 있으며, 살생을 금지하고 있다. 자비를 실천하고 비폭력을 지향해야 하는 불교국가에서 군인을 앞세워 시위대를 공격하는 비참한 일이 일어나고 있는 것에 대해 우리는 통탄을 금치 못한다.
이러한 현실 앞에서 이번 미얀마 사태를 한 나라에 국한된 일로만 바라보아서는 안 될 것이다. 이것은 전 세계의 민주주의와 인권에 대한 도전이기 때문이다. 특히 대한민국은 민주화 항쟁을 통해 민주주의를 실현한 역사를 갖고 있는 나라로서 미얀마 민주항쟁에 더욱 공감하며 지지한다. 따라서 대한민국을 비롯하여 유엔에 가입한 모든 나라들은 미얀마의 사태를 수습하는데 지혜를 모아 협력하고 행동해 줄 것을 촉구한다.
이에 전국비구니회와 여성불자들은 민주주의를 열망하는 미얀마 국민들을 위해 기도회를 개최할 것이고 민주주의가 실현되는 그날까지 미얀마 국민들과 함께 뜻을 같이하며 다음과 같이 선언한다.

하나, 유엔에 가입된 모든 나라는 미얀마의 평화와 안보를 위해 적극적으로 행동하라

Petition to Support Myanmar’s Protest for Democracy
One of the most worrisome and devastating catastrophes in the world is happening right now in Myanmar (Burma). The military, who lost the general election back in November 2020, has started a coup d'etat in order to seize control of power. Protestors, who are peacefully fighting for democracy, are being indiscriminately attacked. As a result, Myanmar’s democracy, which was being partially sustained by the civilian government, is in danger of regressing to its former state of military dictatorship.
Furthermore, Myanmar is a Buddhist country, where 89% of the population holds Buddhism as their primary religion. Buddhism teaches that all living things have a Buddha-nature, and forbids the act of killing. We cannot help but cry out at the fact that such a devastating incident is happening in a Buddhist country, where nonviolence, compassion and loving-kindness is taught and practiced.
In facing this reality, the current crisis in Myanmar should not be viewed as confined to one country. This is a challenge to democracy and human rights all around the world. The Republic of Korea (South Korea), as a country with a history of fighting for democracy through people’s democratization movements and protests, sympathizes greatly with and supports the democratic protest movement in Myanmar. Therefore, we urge all member states of the United Nations, including the Republic of Korea, to pool their wisdom and cooperate to improve the situation in Myanmar.
Accordingly, the Korean Bhiksuni Association and Buddhist women will hold prayer meetings for the people of Myanmar who aspire to democracy. Until the day democracy is realized, we will stand together with the people of Myanmar in spirit, and we declare as follows:
- We support the people of Myanmar who aspire to realize democracy.
- Myanmar’s military forces must relinquish their desire for power and immediately stop all acts of armed repression against the people.
- All member states of the United Nations must actively take action for peace and security in Myanmar.
