Ganhwa Seon

​Ganhwa Seon refers to a Seon (Ch. Chan/ Jap. Zen) meditation which guides practitioners to see directly their true nature through the observance of a hwadu (Ch. huatou/ Jap. koan). A hwadu is a phrase uttered by the Buddha or the patriarchs to which the paths of words and thoughts are severed. Practitioners begin to arouse doubt on the hwadu which can not be resolved through language or thought. Eventually, they become one with the hwadu, penetrating the doubt. Ganhwa Seon is also referred to as “Hwadu Seon” as it is a practice to attain awakening by working on a hwadu.
