The Dancing Peacock

춤추는 공작

Once upon a time, a very long time ago, the birds were attracted to beauty, so they chose the Golden Swan as their king.

옛날 옛적에, 새들이 황금백조의 아름다움에 매혹되어, 그를 왕으로 선택했습니다.

King Golden Swan had a beautiful golden daughter. While she was still young, he granted her one wish. She wished that, when she was old enough, she could pick her own husband.

황금백조 왕에게는 아름다운 딸이 있었는데, 그녀가 아직 소녀일 때, 왕은 딸에게 소원 하나를 들어주기로 했습니다. 어린 딸은 그녀가 결혼할 나이가 되면, 스스로 그녀의 남편을 고를 수 있기를 희망했습니다.

When his daughter was old enough, King Golden Swan called all the birds to find a worthy husband for his golden daughter. There were geese, swans, eagles, sparrows, humming birds, cuckoos, owls and many other kinds of birds.

딸이 충분히 성장하자, 황금백조 왕은 모든 새들을 불러 그의 아름다운 딸에게 걸맞은 훌륭한 신랑감을 찾도록 했습니다. 신랑감 후보로 거위, 백조, 독수리, 참새, 벌새, 뻐꾸기, 부엉이 등 많은 종류의 새들이 있었어요.

King Golden Swan told his lovely daughter to select whichever husband she wished. She looked over the many birds. Her eye was attracted by a shining emerald-green long-necked peacock, with gorgeous flowing tail feathers. She told her father, "This bird, the peacock, will be my husband."

황금백조 왕은 사랑스런 딸에게 그녀가 원하는 어떤 신랑감이든 고르라고 말했습니다. 딸은 많은 새들을 두루 살펴보았지요. 그녀의 눈은 멋진 꼬리 깃털을 드리운 채, 빛나는 에메랄드 녹색의 긴 목을 가진 공작새에게 사로잡혔어요. 그녀는 아버지인 왕에게 말했습니다. “바로 이 공작새가 나의 남편이 될 거에요.“

Hearing that he was the lucky one, all the other birds crowded around the peacock to congratulate him. But the peacock became so puffed up with pride, that he began to show off his colorful feathers in a fantastic strutting dance. He fanned out his spectacular tail feathers and danced in a circle to show off his beautiful tail. Being so conceited, he pointed his head at the sky and forgot all modesty, so that he also showed his most private parts for all to see.

공작새가 행운의 신랑감이 된 것을 듣고, 다른 모든 새들이 축하해 주기 위해 공작새 주변으로 몰려왔습니다. 그러나 자만심에 가득 찬 공작새는, 멋지게 뽐내며 춤추면서 그의 화려한 깃털을 과시하기 시작했습니다. 그는 멋진 꼬리를 자랑하기 위해, 장관인 그의 꼬리 깃털을 활짝 펼치고 원을 그리며 춤을 추었어요. 너무 자만심이 가득 차서, 하늘을 향해 머리를 꼿꼿이 세우고, 모든 겸손한 마음을 잊고 말아, 결국 그는 그의 가장 은밀한 부분까지 모든 새들이 다 볼 수 있도록 보여주고 말았습니다.

So King Golden Swan was not amused. He was embarrassed to see his daughter's choice behave in this way. He thought, ‘This peacock has no inner shame to give him proper modesty. Nor does he have the outer fear to prevent indecent behavior. So why should my daughter be ashamed by such a mindless mate?’

그러자 황금백조 왕은 전혀 기쁘지가 않았어요. 딸이 선택한 신랑감이 이렇게 행동하는 것을 보자 당황했습니다. 왕은 생각했어요, “이 공작새는 올바른 겸손의 마음을 일으키는 내면의 부끄러움도 없고, 이런 적절하지 못한 행동을 막아 줄 외경심도 없다. 대체 왜 내 딸이 이와 같이 생각 없는 배우자 때문에 부끄러워해야 한단 말인가?”

Standing in the midst of the great assembly of birds, the King said, "Sir peacock, your voice is sweet, your feathers are beautiful, your neck shines like an emerald, and your tail is like a splendid fan. But you have danced here like one who has no proper shame or fear. I will not permit my innocent daughter to marry such an ignorant fool!"Then King Golden Swan married his golden daughter to a royal nephew. The silly strutting peacock flew away, having lost a beautiful wife.

왕은 많은 새들 한 가운데 서서, 말했습니다, “공작새 경, 그대의 목소리는 달콤하고, 깃털은 아름다우며, 목은 에메랄드처럼 빛나고, 꼬리는 화려한 부채처럼 멋지오. 하지만 그대는 여기서 바른 염치와 외경심도 없는 사람처럼 춤추었소. 나는 순진한 내 딸이 당신 같은 무지한 바보와 결혼하는 것을 허락하지 않겠소.” 그리고는 왕은 그의 딸을 왕족 조카와 결혼시켜버렸습니다. 어리석고 잘난 척하던 공작새는 아름다운 아내를 잃고서 멀리 날아가 버렸습니다.
