Dreaming the Future While Hanging Out with Monks, Visiting Prestigious Universities
and World Cultural Heritage Sites

Students from temple youth groups and children of Jogye Order employees visited Los
Angeles and San Francisco to explore American culture and Korean Buddhism within the
American society. The Korea-U.S. Youth Buddhist Cultural Explorers hosted by International Dharma Propagation Corps (Chair Ven. Gyeseong) and Korea International Buddhist Network (Chair Ven. Jeongbeom) engaged in diverse activities from July 23 to August 3. The 8th Korea-U.S. Youth Buddhist Cultural Explorers (Chair Ven. Jeongbeom) was consisted of Ven. Hyewon, Ven Hyangil, 12 Korean and 4 American students. The group traveled the downtown of LA while staying at Dalmasa Temple
and participated in Templestay to learn about temple etiquettes at Taegosah Mountain Spirit Center of Tehachapi.

The group also had an opportunity to visit prestigious universities including UCLA and University of Southern Caliornia. Then the explorers visited Griffith Observatory and
The Getty Museum. J. Paul Getty who was a founder of an oil company established the museum near Brentwood, Los Angeles and opened it for free so that many peple can observe the ancient Greek and Roman art pieces.

He also thought about various ways to share his own wealth studying past examples to donate his wealth for the greater good of the society.
The youth explorers were able to not only strengthen their Buddhist faith but also widen their view of the world. Ven. Hyewon from New York and Ven. Hyangil who was practicing at Detroit Zen Center took charge of the group while a former LAPD peace
officer was put in charge of safety.
The young adult group of Dalmasa Temple guided the youth explorers providing them with much help.
LA Association of Jogye Order also welcomed the youth explorers with dinner while the members of Dalmasa Temple community provided much assistance as well making the journey much smoother for the young students.

After 6 days in LA, the youth explorers went to San Francisco to visit Google and Facebook in Silicon Valley in order to see the quickly developing modern science and technology.

The group also stopped by UC Berkley and Stanford. As the youth explorers visited Lombard Street and Golden Gate Bridge for a short cruise trip, they could also witness the busy traffic of one of the most popular cities for tourists in the U.S.

Wildfire at the southern part of California continued to burn and expand to larger area even after 20 days, so the group had to change its destination from Yosemite National Park to Kings Canyon National Park. Throughout the journey, the youth explorers were
able to learn the true meaning of the teaching, “the world as single flower”, by Zen Master Mangong and Zen Master Seungsahn who had propagated Buddhist teachings around the world. And the explorers vowed to think, act and care for others to bloom that single flower.

Korea-U.S. Youth Buddhist Cultural Explorers Program has been held for eight consecutive years. The program, with its tight schedule, has taught the youth explorers to open up their heart and expand their experience in order to learn how to love and
care for the society, their country and the humanity. Since the youth explorers were Buddhists, it was also an opportunity to strengthen their religious faith.

제8회 한미 청소년 불교문화 연수단 10박12일 대장정 회향

스님과 함께 놀면서 배우는 명문대 탐방과 세계문화 유산 보며 꿈 키우기

사찰 청소년 법회에서 활동하고 있는 학생과 불교기관 종무원 자녀들이 세계 문화와 미국 내 한국불교를 체험하기 위하여 미국 서부 도시 로스엔젤레스, 샌프란시스코를 다녀왔다. 국제전법단(단장 계성스님) 주최, 한국불교국제네트워크(대표 정범스님) 주관으로 7월 23일부터 8월3일까지 한미 청소년 불교문화연수 활동을 진행했다. 제8회 한미청소년 불교문화 연수단(단장 정범스님)은 연수단장 혜원스님, 부단장 향일스님을 비롯하여 한국 12명, 뉴욕 3명, LA 1명으로 구성됐다. 한국 사찰 달마사에서 숙식하며 LA 시내 탐방과 함께 문화를 체험하고, 테하차피 태고사에서는 템플스테이를 하며 발우공양과 사찰 예절 등을 배웠다. UCLA, 서던캘리포니아대학교 등 명문대 탐방을 통해 진로 탐색의 기회를 가졌으며, 그린피스 천문대, 게티 박물관 등을 방문하며 기술과 문화를 체험하기도 했다. 석유왕 진 폴 게티는 로스엔젤레스 브렌트 우드 근교에 박물관을 개관하여 무료로 개방, 많은 사람들에게 고대 그리스나 로마 시대 작품을 관람할 수 있도록 하는 등 막대한 돈을 벌어 사회에 환원한 좋은 본보기를 보며, 자신이 가진 것을 나누는 방법에 대해 고민하기도 했다. 생생한 경험들을 통해 불심뿐만 아니라 세계를 보는 눈을 넓히고 마음도 훌쩍 자라게 되었다. 특히 혜원스님(뉴욕)과 디트로이트 젠센터에서 수행정진 중이던 향일스님을 비롯하여 LA 전직 경찰관이 합류하여 안전을 맡았으며, 현지 달마사 청년회 법우들이 안내를 맡아 청소년들의 연수에 많은 도움을 줬다. 뿐만 아니라 LA조계종연합회에서 본국 청소년들을 위해 저녁공양도 사주시며 환영해줬고, 달마사 신도들도 연수에 많은 힘을 보태며, 어렵고 힘든 청소년 포교에 단비가 되어줘 고마웠다.

5박 6일간의 LA 일정을 마치고 샌프란시스코를 향한 우리는 수준 높은 현대 과학이 조화를 이루고 있는 실리콘벨리에 자리 잡은 구글, 페이스북을 방문했다. UC 버클리대, 스텐포드 대학교를 탐방하고, 다운타운과 언덕으로 이루어진 샌프란시스코의 지형을 이용한 꽃길 롬바드, 크루즈을 타고 금문교를 돌아오는 동안 구경하는 소살리토 등, 세계인들이 선호하는 관광지답게 트래픽도 심하고 번잡한 도시였다.

캘리포니아 남쪽의 산불이 근 20여 일이 지났는데도 계속 번지고 연기 등으로 요세미티 국립공원 입산이 금지되어 우린 킹스캐년으로 목적지를 변경했다. 무궁화꽃으로 ‘세계일화’를 쓰신 만공스님의 정신을 이어 세계에 부처님법을 널리 퍼뜨려 알리신 숭산스님의 가르침처럼, 먼 나라의 일이 곧 우리의 일이 되듯 우린 한송이 꽃을 피우기 위해 생각하고 행동하고 보살피며 살아야 한다는 교훈 하나 얻었다.

한미 청소년 불교문화 연수는 올해로 여덟 번을 진행하며 쌓아온 알찬 일정으로 사회와 나라 그리고 인류를 위해 자원 하나라도 아끼고 사랑하며 살아가도록 청소년들의 마음과 경험의 폭을 넓히고, 불자 자녀들이기에 불심도 다듬는 좋은 기회였다.
