The Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in the Midwest Regional Jogye Order of America and the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in Los Angeles, California

With the advent of the year of the Red Rooster, Venerable Jiam, the abbot of the Gwaneumsa Temple in L.A., led an historic ceremony on January 15, embarking on a new journey with a hundred guests representing the Buddhist community in Southern California. Fifteen temples in the region have been made part of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA, in addition to the Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in the Midwest Region in America, in order to establish a special overseas district. Thus, the inauguration ceremony for ‘The Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in the Midwest Regional Jogye Order of America’ headed by Venerable Hyunil as the chair, and ‘the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA’ was held in the first part of the program. In the second part of the program, the chair of the Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in Southern California was appointed, who has been leading the Buddhist community. New Year’s greetings were hosted by the Division of Dharma Propagation of the Jogye Order in LA in the third and final part of the program.

Venerable Jeongbeom, the Director of General Affairs of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA, gave a progress report as follows: “Last November at Rotex Hotel in LA, the monks from the temples of the Jogye Order in LA gathered to establish the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA, and formed a committee for founding a special district. As the Jogye Order is the largest sect of Korean Buddhism, nearly fifteen out of twenty Korean temples in the Southern California area were named as its members. However, these temples operate independently without any official support from the Jogye Order. For this reason, there have been a number of difficulties concerning Dharma propagation and the education of monks, as well as the ongoing training of laity. Consequently, a committee was established to form a special district and the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A. Thanks to the success of this mission, official funding from the sect has been secured, which has provided us with the opportunity to expedite dharma propagation.” In his inaugural speech, Venerable Hyunil commented, “For over 50 years, numerous monks and lay practitioners have worked relentlessly to propagate Korean Buddhism since its arrival in America, but they have been confronted with countless difficulties and problems. With the establishment of this district, one of the main tasks of the Jogye Order, we have put our efforts into the goal of founding a diocese in the Midwest. Thus, it is our belief that the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA will become the mother institution in the foundation of the district.” Furthermore, he quoted, ‘If you want to go quickly, go alone; however, if you wish to go far, go with others.’ He proposed harmony and ardent practice as our founding principles and put emphasis into the continuous realization of these goals. In addition, he added that the foundation of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in LA will add much more synergy to the Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in Southern California.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in Southern California, which has been hosting all ceremonies within Korean Buddhism, regardless of sect, has appointed Venerable Jiam, the abbot of Gwaneumsa, as a new head, following his predecessor Venerable Myogyeong, the abbot of Korea Sah Buddhist Temple. In his vow, Venerable Jiam solemnly pledged to work diligently toward setting up an exemplary organization. He chose harmony, communication and sustainable growth as the main goals of practicing the compassion of Buddha in his inaugural speech.

In the final section of the New Year’s greetings, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Buddhist Missionary Association Inc., L.A., wholeheartedly offered a tea ceremony to the esteemed monks. Afterwards, they gave three prostrations, and received a New Year’s blessing. Finally a song by the Korean Buddhist Choir of Southern California brought the program to its conclusion. They conveyed the wish of the whole Buddhist community, “In the coming New Year, I wish for this New Year to bring new energy into the Buddhist community of Southern California, and brings forth an opportunity for hopeful regrowth.”

정유년 새해를 맞이하여 LA 관음사(주지 지암스님)는 1월 15일 남가주 지역의 불교계 대표와 신도 100여 명이 참석한 가운데 새로운 출발을 다짐하는 뜻 깊은 행사를 봉행했다. 남가주 지역 조계종 15개 사찰이 모여 LA조계종연합회가 결성되고, 미 중‧서부지역 해외특별교구 설립을 위한 추진위원회가 결성됨에 따라 ‘미 중‧서부 해외특별교구추진위원회(회장 현일스님)’와 ‘LA조계종연합회’의 출범식이 1부 행사로 진행되었다. 2부에서는 남가주 불교계를 이끌어 오던 남가주불교사원연합회 회장 이‧취임식, 3부는 LA 조계종 포교사단이 주최하는 신년하례식이 거행되었다.

LA조계종연합회의 사무처장인 정범스님은 “작년 11월 LA로텍스 호텔에서 남가주 조계종 사찰 회원스님들이 만나 LA조계종연합회와 특별교구설립추진위원회를 결성했다. 대한불교조계종은 한국 불교의 최대 종단으로서 남가주지역 한인 불교 사찰 20여 개 가운데 15개 사찰이 조계종 소속이지만, 그 동안 본국 종단의 공식적 지원 없이 개별 사찰 위주로 운영되어 포교 활동과 승려 연수 그리고 신도 재교육 등 여러 가지 어려움을 겪어 왔으나, 이번 교구설립추진위원회와 LA조계종연합회의 출범으로 본국 종단의 지원을 받아 포교 활성화에 박차를 가할 수 있게 되었다.”며 경과보고를 했다. 현일스님은 취임사에서, “미국에 한국 불교가 전래된 지 50년이 넘는 동안 여러 스님들이 각자 신도들과 함께 포교와 정진에 노력해 왔으나 그 과정에는 많은 어려움과 문제점이 있었다. 교구 설립은 본국 종단의 종책 사업으로, 우리도 함께 가기 위해 미 중‧서부 교구를 설립하고자 뜻을 세웠으며, LA조계종연합회는 교구설립의 모체가 될 것”이라고 말했다. 그리고 ‘빨리 가려면 혼자 가고 멀리 가려면 함께 가야 한다.’는 말을 인용하여 화합과 정진을 교구 이념으로 삼아, 항상 서로 화합하고 정진하며 함께 가자고 강조했다. 또한, LA조계종 연합회의 출범으로 남가주불교사원연합회도 더욱 힘을 받고 서로 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있을 것이라고 강조했다.

한편, 이 지역 한국불교계의 모든 종단을 아울러 불교계 행사를 주관해 왔던 남가주불교사원연합회는 지난 4년 동안 회장을 맡아온 묘경스님(고려사 주지)의 뒤를 이어 지암스님(관음사 주지)을 새 회장으로 선출했다. 지암스님은 취임사에서, “화합과 소통, 발전이라는 세 가지 화두를 소명으로 삼아, 부처님의 자비사상을 열심히 실천하는 모범적인 연합회가 되도록 혼신의 노력을 다 하겠다.”고 다짐했다.

마지막으로 이어진 신년하례식에서는 LA조계종 포교사단이 정성스레 준비한 다과로 스님들께 다례를 올린 후 다함께 삼배를 드리고, 스님들의 새해 덕담을 듣는 시간을 가졌다. 남가주불교연합합창단의 축가가 울려 퍼진 가운데 진행된 행사에는 “새해를 맞이하여 남가주불교계에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고, 희망찬 재도약의 발판을 마련하는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠다.”는 불자들의 염원이 오롯이 담겨있었다.
