Bulkwang Zen Center: the Pinnacle of Korean Buddhism in America

The word “Tappan” means ‘a cold river’ in the language of an Eastern Native American tribe.

Compared to the name of the large river nearby, which was named after Henry Hudson, the first British man to set foot on the land, the name Tappan seems warmer and more indigenous. After crossing the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan, and driving along the Palisades Parkway for 30 minutes, one comes to a sign reading “Tappan.” Exiting the south end of the parkway onto Route 303 and driving another five minutes, the head of a Buddha statue and a stone lantern come into view on the right, just after the Chrysler parts depot.

Like two totem poles, signs for “Bulkwang Zen Center,” one written in Korean and another in English, stand side by side. Twenty meter-tall leafy trees greet you just inside the entrance, and you may be blinded for a moment as your eyes fall upon the Dharma hall, newly constructed in 2009, shining brightly in the sun.

At the entrance to the Dharma hall, the main office can be found on the first floor, as well as a couple of rooms used for youth group Dharma talks and the living quarters for resident monks. Across the spacious lawn lies the Gwaneumjeon or Avalokitesvara Hall, which was the residence for the monks before the new building was built. This cultural landmark, well over 200 years old, seems rather small and insignificant from the outside. Once you enter the building, however, it is quite spacious, including a children’s Dharma room, living quarters, and dining hall, as well as a library for kids in the basement.

In the past, Bulkwang Zen Center was able to assist monks with their scholastic endeavors. If a monk or nun came to the center eager to learn, the temple supported their language education. If they excelled further, additional support was provided until they could complete a master’s or doctoral degree, as monk and nuns are the future of Buddhism and the world.

Unfortunately, Bulkwang Zen Center was not that rich. Most influential people in America are Christians, and so they often share their wealth with Christian causes. In those days few donations were offered to the temple, so it was on a tight budget. Regardless, the collective efforts of a few core members formed a scholarship fund during the second year of its establishment. Twenty people collected $50 each and created a huge mountain of funding.

During the financial crisis in South Korea, a number of students were having difficulties, so the scholarship fund started providing support for them to whatever extent possible, though there wasn’t much to offer. During this period, many monks, such as Venerable Harim, Ilmi, Jeongbeom, Hyemin, and Seonmun moved past this dark time and focused on learning with conviction, lighting the way to cultivation. One of them graduated from Harvard University, obtaining a doctoral degree and becoming a professor, and another became a cymbal dancer for barachum dancing and drumming. Another went back to South Korea and became an abbot fluent in English, leading the practice of faith. Once their relationship ended, the rest just went on to their paths without any trace.

In midst of these ups and downs, the new Dharma hall was completed and enshrined with the Medicine Buddha. Afterwards, at the end of 777 days of chanting for the Medicine Buddha, the temple was free of debt.

On Saturday afternoons, the Gwaneumjeon or Avalokitesvara Hall is full of noise. Children practice Korean and make friends at the Korean Cultural School. Some of them seem more comfortable speaking English and sitting in chairs than on the floor. Regardless, the young ones always talk joyfully among themselves.

The abbot, Venerbale Hwigwang, considers children to be the most important of all. Beyond Korea, Buddhism is spreading to the world! The future of Buddhism depends on children. There will always be children playing on the lawn of Bulkwang Zen Center. A little baby in the arms of a Korean nun at Bulkwang Zen Center twenty years ago has now gone through childhood, junior and high school, the youth group, and finally become a 24-year-old adult. At last, he took the first step into society as a confident member of the community, having graduated from his university under the care of Buddha. All things pass, and time continues to march forward.

미국 한국불교의 큰 산, 뉴욕 불광선원

“불심과 동심을 배우고 나누고 자라는 곳”

타판, 미국 동부 인디언들의 말로 ‘차가운 강’이란 뜻이다.

인근 커다란 강이 이 땅을 처음 밟은 영국인 헨리 허드슨에서 따온 것과 비교할 때 타판은 토속적이고 정감 넘치는 이름이다. 뉴욕 맨해튼에서 조지 워싱턴 다리를 건너 펠리사이드 인터스테이트 하이웨이를 따라 30여분 달리면 타판이라는 표지판이 보인다. 고속도로에서 남쪽으로 빠져나와 303번 도로로 5분을 달리면 크라이슬러 부품공장을 지나 오른편에 불상 두 구와 석등이 보인다.

한글 ‘불광선원’과 영문 ‘Bulkwang Zen Center'의 표지판이 장승처럼 사이좋게 나란히 서 있다. 20미터는 족히 되어 보이는 활엽수 사이의 진입로 안쪽으로 2009년에 새로 지은 법당 뒷벽이 눈이 시릴 만큼 하얗게 빛난다.

법당은 입구에 작은 종무소를 두고 1층 전체에 자리 잡았다. 청년 법회, 청소년 법회에 쓰이는 방 두 칸과 스님들의 숙소가 있다. 넓은 잔디밭 마당을 지나 가로로 놓인 건물이 새 법당이 지어지기 전 법당이자 스님 숙소로 쓰였던 관음전이다. 200년도 훨씬 넘은 문화재로 겉에서 볼 때는 작고 아담한 건물인데, 안으로 들어가면 어린이 법당과 요사와 식당 그리고 지하에 어린이 도서관으로 쓰던 넓은 장소까지 널찍널찍한 공간들이 자리하고 있다.

불광선원에 오면 공부를 할 수 있었다. 공부 하고 싶은 스님이 오면 랭귀지 스쿨에 다니도록 지원하고, 더 잘하면 석사, 박사 과정까지 공부할 수 있도록 했다. 세상을 위해, 불교의 내일을 위해 기꺼이 해야 하는 일이었다.

그렇다고 불광선원이 큰 부자는 아니었다. 미국에서 큰소리 좀 치고 산다는 사람은 기독교인인 경우가 많았다. 또한 그만그만하게 들어오는 보시라 절집 살림은 대개 여유가 없는 편이었다. 하지만 개원 다음 해 작은 손들이 모여 장학회를 만들었다. 스무 명이 50불씩 십시일반 모아 놓으니 큰 산이 되었다. 마침 한국에는 IMF가 닥쳐서 유학을 하던 인재들이 곤란을 겪던 때에 장학회는 적으나마 아낌없는 지원을 시작했다. 하림스님, 일미스님, 정범스님, 혜민스님, 선문스님 등 많은 스님들이 그 그늘을 지나 씩씩하고 당당하게 학문의 길, 수행의 길을 밝혀 나갔다. 하버드대를 나와서 박사가 되고 교수가 된 스님이 있는가 하면 어떤 스님은 북 치고 바라춤 잘 추는 스님이 되기도 했다. 또 어떤 스님은 한국으로 돌아가 신행활동을 잘 이끌고 영어도 잘하는 주지스님이 되기도 했다. 인연이 다하면 그뿐 스님들은 흔적 없이 제 갈 길을 찾아 떠났다.

그러는 사이 우여곡절 끝에 큰법당 공사를 마치고 약사여래불을 모셨다. 그 뒤 ‘777일 약사여래기도’를 회향하고 나서야 빚을 모두 갚을 수 있었다.

토요일 오후, 관음전은 야단법석 떠들썩하다. 불광선원 한국문화학교가 열리는 시간. 여기서 아이들은 한국말을 배우고, 친구를 사귄다. 하지만 이미 영어가 더 편하고 방바닥 보다는 의자가 더 편한 아이들이었다. 어쨌든 아이들은 끼리끼리 의사소통에 열심이었다.

휘광스님은 무엇보다 어린이를 가장 소중히 여긴다. 한국을 넘어, 세계로 퍼지는 불교! 불교의 미래는 어린이에게 달려 있다. 불광선원 마당에는 늘 어린이가 뛰어 놀 것이다. 스무 해전 바구니에 안겨 절에 왔던 갓난아기들이 불광선원 어린이부, 중고등부, 청년부를 거쳐 스물네 살 성인이 되었다. 부처님 발아래서 대학을 졸업하고 당당한 사회인으로 첫발을 내딛었다.

모든 것은 지나간다. 그리고 세월은 여전히 흐를 것이다.
