Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in Los Angeles Opens a New Chapter of

Dharma Propagation in the U.S.

The Jogye Order temples on the West coast of the U.S. are ushering in a new era of regional Dharma propagation with the spirit of harmony and earnest commitment. On January 15 of this year, the inauguration ceremony for the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in Los Angeles and the Federation of Korean Buddhist Temples in the Western Region (Ven. Hyunil as the chair) for the establishment of a special overseas district was held at Gwaneumsa (Ven. Jiam abbot) in L.A. The ceremony added fresh momentum to the Dharma propagation efforts on the West coast.

The temples in Southern California operate independently without any official support from the Jogye Order, thus having difficulties with Dharma propagation, education of monastics and ongoing training of lay Buddhists. However, the launch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A., which is comprised of fifteen temples affiliated with the Order, laid the groundwork for a variety of Dharma propagation activities, continued education of monastics, systemized management of temples in accordance with the local legal framework, introductory education for lay Buddhists, and training for Dharma teachers.

As a result of forming this new organization, activities centered on Templestay and Temple Food, which are recently enjoying greater popularity in the U.S., are expected to be further improved. In addition, the Lotus Lantern Festival, one of the most significant celebratory events in the Buddhist community, will be held in a more developed way. The newly established Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A. currently consists of fifteen Jogye Order temples in Southern California, including Bup Wahng Sah, Korea Sah, Prajna Gate, Tahl Mah Sah, Kwan Um Temple, Seun Gak Sa, Diamond Zen Center and Mountain Spirit Center. Moving forward the organization plans to expand its membership to Korean Buddhist temples in Northern California, the Midwest, Hawaii and even Canada.

Jogye Order Training for Monastics Held in the U.S. for the First Time

The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A., along with the International Dharma Propagation Group, provided a three-day training course for Jogye Order monastics in the U.S. for the first time.

From May 5 to 8, the training was offered at Tahl Mah Sah in L.A. under the theme of ‘the current status of Dharma propagation in the U.S. and propagation strategies’ certified by the Jogye Order Bureau of Monastic Training.

Ven. Gyesung, the chief of the International Dharma Propagation Group, gave a lecture about ‘the mission of Dharma instructors for international Dharma propagation’, while Ven. Hyunil, the chairman of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A. walked the audiences through the history of Dharma propagation of Korean Buddhism in the Western region of the U.S.

In addition, Ven. Jino, who is leading the NPO entitled ‘People Making Dreams Come True’, delivered a presentation about immigrants in Korea and the ways to facilitate Dharma propagation. Vice Chief Ven. Jeongbeom of the International Dharma Propagation Group highlighted the roles and future directions of the Jogye Order’s international Dharma propagation. A lecture about religious worker visas and the immigration system was also given by a lawyer, while the current status of Korean Buddhism in the U.S. and the ways to be taken for Dharma propagation in the future were covered.

A Training Program Offered for Those Who Passed the Dharma Propagation Exam in L.A.

The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A. gave a training for those who passed the Dharma propagation exam this year in L.A., according to the guidelines of the Jogye Order Bureau of Dharma Propagation.

At the three-day training from June 23 to 25 held at the Mountain Spirit Center, the abbot of Tahl Mah Sah, Ven. Jeongbeom, and Ven. Hyungjeon, the abbot of the center delivered lectures about understanding the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and the transformation of worship movements, Buddhist rituals, Dharma propagation procedures and the desirable attitude and roles of Dharma instructors. In addition, training participants performed 108 prostrations and engaged in a brief Seon meditation session.

The soon-to-be Dharma instructors will personally perform Buddhist rituals and ceremonies and will be evaluated by the abbots of Korea Sah, Junghyesa, Tahl Mah Sah and Prajna Gate.

From April of this year, the future instructors were grouped into teams for children, youth, welfare and culture and joined forces for a variety of activities. The candidates are required to take part in volunteer activities in society and at Buddhist events until July, such as volunteer work for a half-day or longer at their affiliated temples, helping the homeless, and park cleanup.

Dharma propagation in the U.S. has been performed solely depending on the individual monastic’s commitment and coincidental aid up until now.

As such propagation efforts were made without much preparation, monastics had a hard time getting accustomed to local life, without support from the Jogye Order.

The cohesive and united Dharma propagation activities centering around the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in L.A. are expected to serve as a solution to challenges that the Buddhist community in the U.S. has faced so far, while spearheading the efforts to let more Americans know the Buddha’s teachings in the heart of the Western region of the U.S.

LA조계종연합회: 미주 포교의 역사를 다시 쓴다.

미 중서부지역의 조계종 사찰들이 화합과 정진으로 지역 포교에 새로운 시대를 맞고 있다. 새롭게 도약하고 있는 미 중서부 지역의 포교활동의 단초가 된 것은 지난 1월 15일 LA 관음사(주지 지암스님)에서 가진 LA조계종연합회 및 미 중․서부지역 해외특별교구 설립 추진위원회(회장 현일스님) 발대식이다.

남가주 지역의 15개 조계종 소속 사찰들로 이루어진 LA조계종연합회의 출범으로 그 동안 본국 종단의 공식적 지원 없이 개별 사찰 위주로 운영되어 포교 활동과 승려 연수 그리고 신도 재교육 등 여러 가지 어려움을 겪어 왔던 상황을 벗어나 종단의 지원으로 포교사업이 활성화되고 또 스님들의 재교육, 사찰 현황 파악 및 현지법에 의거한 사찰 관리, 불자 입문교육 및 포교사 교육 등이 체계화될 토대가 마련되었다. 또한 최근 미국 내 관심이 높아지고 있는 템플 스테이와 사찰음식 사업에 내실을 기하고 불교 최대 행사인 연등 축제를 한 단계 업그레이드해 펼쳐갈 수 있게 된다. 법왕사, 고려사, 반야사, 달마사, 관음사, 선각사, 금강선원, 태고사 등 15곳의 조계종 사찰이 LA조계종연합회에 참여하고 있으며, 앞으로 남가주를 중심으로 북가주, 중부, 하와이, 캐나다 지역의 한인 사찰들도 포용할 계획이다.

미주 지역 최초의 교육원 종단연수 실시

LA조계종연합회는 국제전법단과 함께 미국 최초로 교육원 종단연수를 실시했다.

5월 5일부터 8일까지 3일간 LA달마사에서 ‘미국 불교 전법의 현황과 포교전략’을 주제로 교육원 승려연수 인증교육과정을 운영했다. 국제전법단장 계성스님이 ‘해외포교 전법사의 사명’을 주제로 강의했으며 LA조계종연합회 회장 현일스님이 ‘미서부 한국불교 전법의 역사’에 대해 살펴보았다. 또 꿈을이루는사람들 대표 진오스님이 ‘대한민국 외국인주민 현황과 포교활성화방안’에 대해, 국제전법단 부단장 정범스님이 ‘종단 국제전법 역할과 향후 방향’에 대해 강연했다. 또 종교비자, 종교이민 등 미국법에 대해 알아보는 변호사 강연, 미국 한국불교의 현황과 나아갈 길 등을 주제로 한 강연도 준비되었다.

LA불교대학 포교사 합격생들을 위한 연수 프로그램 진행

LA조계종연합회는 종단 포교원의 지침으로 금년 LA지역의 일반포교사 합격생들을 대상으로 연수교육을 실시했다. 6월23일(금)부터 25일까지(일)까지 3일간 태고사에서 열린 연수에서는 달마사 주지 정범스님과 태고사 주지 형전스님을 강사로 ‘조계종의 이해와 신행혁신 운동’, ‘불교의식의 이해’, ‘포교 방법론’, 포교사의 자세와 역할 등의 강연과 함께 108배와 참선 시간을 가졌다. 앞으로 합격자들은 또한 고려사, 정혜사, 달마사, 반야사 등의 주지스님들에게 직접 의식 집전 면담 평가도 받는다. 이외 4월에서 7월의 기간 동안 어린이, 청소년, 복지 분야, 문화 등의 팀으로 나뉘어 공동 활동을 벌이게 되며, 소속 사찰에서의 12시간 이상 봉사, 홈리스 돕기, 공원 청소 등 다양한 사회 봉사활동 및 불교 행사 봉사 활동 등을 이수해야 한다.

미주지역 포교는 그간 스님 개인의 원력과 인연에 의지해 왔다. 충분한 준비 없이 포교활동을 시작함으로써 현지 적응에 어려움을 겪었고 종단차원의 도움도 미약했다. LA조계종연합회를 통해 응집되고 단결되는 포교 활동의 모습은 이런 문제에 대한 대안이 되리라 믿는다. 미중서부 포교의 구심점 LA조계종연합회의 원대한 앞날을 응원한다.
