(Me too, With you, With Us in Compassion)”라는 주제로 진행되었다.

Spreading Buddha’s Compassion by Celebrating Buddha’s Birthday with the International Lotus Lantern Parade Korean Buddhism for International Readers

On May 6, 2018 from 3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., the 30th International Lotus Lantern
Parade for the Celebration of Buddha’s Birthday was held. It was hosted by the East Regional Jogye Order of North America, Union Square Park in Manhattan,
New York.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of celebrating this meaningful occasion. The International Lotus Lantern Parade for the Celebration of Buddha’s Birthday proceeded with the theme of “Me Too, With You, With Us in Compassion,” to
demonstrate how Buddhism can support people in suffering.

The two-part event was planned and directed by an opera singer named Sorim Park. She stated that over the past three months, she has focused her efforts mainly on emphasizing the aesthetic elements of Korean Buddhist ceremonies and the compassion of Buddhism.

The first part of the program began with Jongsong, or a bell-chanting gatha; seven Jeongrye or prostrations; walking meditation; and lastly the recitation of
Banyasimgyeong or The Heart Sutra with about twenty monks from the East Regional Jogye Order of North America.

The second part of the program opened with the chanting of Samgwiui or the Threefold Refuges; followed by a recitation of the sutra of compassion; offering of Buddhist hymns; a dharma talk; a Gwanbul ceremony (bathing the Buddha); and finally the lotus lantern parade.

In the dharma talk, Venerable Jigwang, the president of East Regional Jogye Order of North America, explained the meaning of compassion in this period of
time, basing his words on the sutra of compassion. With this theme in mind, he offered words of comfort to communities of women, immigrants, and the weak, as well sexual minorities suffering in pain.

To add more weight to the message, the sutra of compassion was recited by children and several bhikkhus (Sunmyeong, Sunghwa, Hyewon, and Gowoo)
of the Bulkwang Zen Center in New York, as a way to support the distressed women of the Me Too movement. The words resonated with the meaning of
Buddha’s birthday this year and every year in the future.

Additionally, the Buddhist hymns were sung by the Mahayeon Choir, and led by conductor Sorim Park. This performance was put on by Buddhist devotees
of the temples in New York and New Jersey, members of the East Regional Jogye Order of North America. Their participation heightened the meaning of the
celebration.

The 30th International Lotus Lantern Parade for the Celebration of Buddha’s Birthday of 2018 was an event filled with significance, showing how compassion, the core teaching of Buddhism, can be advocated in America through Korean Buddhist ceremonies.
