“홀연히 묵은 습성이 일어나거든
일부러 마음을 내어 그것을 억누르려 하지 말고
그 일어난 곳을 향하여 화두를 들면
마치 시뻘건 화로 위의 한 점 눈과도 같이 녹아 없어지리라.”




   세간의 학문과 그 중에서도 철학은 언어 문자를 통한 논리와 사상이 작용함으로서 그 소이(所以, 까닭, 일이 생기게 된 원인이나 조건)가 있는 것이지만, 선문의 활구인 화두는 모든 말과 생각이 함께 끊어져서 부여잡을 만한 아무 근거도 없고, 아무 맛과 취향이 없는 데에 그 생명이 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 옛 선사님들이 말씀하시길 “활구 아래서 깨치면 영겁토록 잊지 않고, 사구 아래서 깨치면 자기마저 구제하지 못 한다(活句下薦得 永劫不忘 死句下薦得 自救不了).”고 하신 것입니다.
   석가세존께서 다자탑 앞에서 설법하실 때 가섭을 불러 자리의 반을 나눠 함께 앉으셨으니(多子塔前分半座) 이것이 제1의 공안이 되었습니다.
   다음으로 영산회상에서 설법하실 때 사방의 하늘에서 꽃비가 쏟아져 내리니 세존께서 그 꽃을 집어 들어 보이셨으나 인천(人天)의 백만억 대중은 영문을 몰랐지만 오직 가섭만이 미소를 지으셨습니다(靈山會上擧拈花). 이에 세존께서 말씀하시기를 “나의 정법안장과 열반묘심을 마하가섭에게 부촉하노라(吾有正法眼藏涅槃妙心 付囑摩訶迦葉)”고 하셨으니 이것이 두 번째 공안입니다.
   세존께서 쿠시나가라 사라쌍수 아래서 열반에 드신 지 이레 째 되는 날, 마하가섭이 뒤늦게 도착하여 세존의 관을 오른쪽으로 세 바퀴 돌고 나자 세존께서 두 발을 내보이시니 마하가섭이 예배를 하였습니다(尼蓮河畔示雙趺). 이것이 이른바 세존께서 마하가섭에게 세 곳에서 마음을 전하신 삼처전심입니다.


   삼보에 귀의하옵고,

   희망찬 새해가 밝았습니다.
   그리고 음력으로는 오는 2월 14일이 경인년이 시작 되는 설날입니다.
   이미 새해 인사를 올렸지만 다시 한 번 흰 호랑이의 해, 경인년 한 해도 불자님들 가정마다 부처님의 자비광명이 항상하시기를 발원 드립니다.
   한국에서는 전통적으로 매년 새해 음력 정초가 되면 불자님들은 가족과 함께 절을 찾아 부처님께 절을 하고 지난 한 해 알게 모르게 쌓았던 죄업을 참회하고 한 해의 평안과 소원을 빌어 왔습니다.
   저희 태고사에서는 오는 2월 14일의 설날을 기하여 한 해의 평안을 기원하는 정초 기도를 봉행합니다.
   미처 신정을 기한 새해 기도를 제대로 시작하지 못하신 분들은 이 때를 기하여 새로운 다짐과 함께 복된 한 해를 위한 기도 정진에 들어갈 수 있습니다.
   하오니 이 번 기회에 두루 동참하시어 금년 내내 부처님의 가호 속에 소망하시는 일들이 원만히 성취 되시길 바랍니다.

<알리는 말씀>


1. 정초 기도

   태고사에서는 설날을 기하여 올 한 해의 평안을 기원하는 정초 기도를 봉행합니다.
   여러 불자님들께서는 두루 동참하시기 바랍니다.

   입재 : 2010년2월14일(음력 1월1일, 일요일) 오전 11시.
   회향 : 2010년2월21일(음력 1월8일, 일요일) 오전 11시.


2. 인등을 밝힙시다

   부처님 전에 인등을 밝히는 것은 마음이 맑아져 지혜를 얻고 모든 일이 순조롭고 장애가 없기를 바람입니다.
   부처님 당시 ‘난다’라고 하는 가난한 여인이 부처님께 작은 등불을 올렸는데 그 너무나 지극한 정성을 보시고 부처님께서 “그 공덕으로 이 여인은 30겁 후에 등광여래불이 되리라.”고 수기해 주셨습니다.
   누구든 정성이 지극하면 하늘도 감복하는 것입니다.
   무명을 제거하는 지혜의 등불, 그것이 바로 인등을 켜는 공덕인 것입니다.
   인등은 가족등, 1인등 구분 없이 매월 20불입니다.


3. 설날 차례

   동양에서는 설날과 한식, 추석 및 동지에 차례를 지내는 풍습이 있습니다.
   태고사에서도 설날과 추석에는 차례를 올립니다. 이번 설날에 태고사에서 차례를 올리고 싶으신 분은 미리 접수하여 주시길 바랍니다.

   일시 : 2010년2월14일(음1월1일) 11시.


4. 삼재 기도

   한국의 민간 신앙으로 경인년은 원숭이, 쥐, 용띠에게 삼재가 드는 해라고도 합니다.
   모든 재난과 재앙은 꼭 경인년이라서가 아니라 우리의 마음이 탐진치로 더렵혀짐으로써 비롯됩니다. 따라서 불보살님께 삼재를 소멸시켜 달라고 기도만 할 것이 아니라 우리 마음이 이런 재난을 부르지 않고 바르게 살 수 있도록 스스로 다짐하고 기원을 해야 하는 것입니다. 불보살님은 우리가 잘못된 길을 갈 때 깨우쳐 주시는 것이지 억지로 바른 길로 끌고 가시지는 않기 때문입니다.
   태고사에서는 가정과 개인의 평안을 위하여 삼재 기도를 올립니다.
   이번 삼재 기도를 통하여 우리 마음속에서 탐내고 성내며 어리석음에 물든 마음을 끄집어내어 불보살님의 가피속에서 낱낱이 녹여 버리시기 바랍니다.

   회향 : 2010년2월28일(음력 1월15일, 일요일) 오전 11시.

In the Year of White Tiger


“If old habits emerge
Do not try to depress them by your mind
But just raise your topic
Until they melt like pieces of snow above a burning stove.”



   Secular learning and one of its branches, philosophy has grounds by employing language and letters. However, the topics, vivid phrases of zen has its life on the point that they cut all the words and thinking, no root to rely on, nothing to grasp.
   Therefore, ancient zen masters said, “If you are enlightened by a vivid topic, you will never forget it. If you got it by a dead topic, you will not even be able to save yourself.”
When Sakyamuni Buddha preached in front of the Multi-Child Tower, he invited Mahakashyapa and shared the seat with him. This is the first koan.
   Next, in the meeting at Mount Grdhrakuta, people were caught in the rain of flower while Buddha was preaching to them. Buddha picked a flower and showed it to the people. Nobody in the heaven or on earth understood what he meant but only Mahakashyapa responded with a smile. Then Buddha said, “I ask Mahakashyapa to take my insight warehouse of the truths and excellent mind of nirvana.” This is the second koan.
   On the seventh day after Buddha’s death under the twin trees of Sara in the village of Kushnagara, Mahakashyapa arrived lately at the scene. He turned around the coffin of Buddha to the right until Buddha exposed his feet out of the coffin. He bowed to the feet.    This is the third koan. People call it transmission of mind to mind at three places.

   Vowing to Buddha and all the Boddhisattvas in the Universe;

   We greeted a hopeful new year.
   And in lunar calendar, the new year of white tiger will begin on February 14.
   While we already exchanged New Year’s greetings, I’d like to wish once more that Buddha’s passion and brightness will accompany all the members of Mountain Spirit Center all the time.
   In Korea, many Buddhists and their families keep the tradition of visiting a temple on the New Year’s Day of lunar calendar. They bow to Buddha, confess their misbehaviors they made consciously or unconsciously last year and pray for their wishes and a peaceful New Year.
   We observe the Lunar New Year on February 14th and pray for a peaceful new year.
If you missed the solar New Year to start your prayer, you may take this chance to start a refreshment of your resolution for a fruitful new year.
   Hence I ask you to participate in the prayer for Buddha’s protection of you and smooth materializing of your dreams throughout the year.

1. New Year’s prayer

   We start prayer on lunar New Year for a peaceful new year.
   We encourage you to participate in the prayer.

   Starts at 11 am on Feb 14
   Finishes at 11 am on Feb 21


2. Family Lanterns

   We light lanterns in the Buddha hall to make our mind bright. We wish to be wiser and more capable to materialize our dreams with fewer difficulties.
   During Buddha’s days, a lady named Nanda offered a small lantern to Buddha. Seeing her sincere mind, Buddha predicted that she will be the Lantern Bright Buddha after 30 kalpas.
   Heaven will notice any extreme devotions.
   Lightening a lantern is the merit of brightening wisdom.
   You may light a lantern at $20 for a person or for a family.


3. Ancestor Memorial Service on Lunar New Year

   In the Eastern Asia, many people observe memorial service for their ancestors on Lunar New Year’s Day, Hansik, Chusok and the winter solstice.
   We observe service for Lunar New Year’s Day and Chusok. If you wish to participate for your ancestors on the coming lunar New Year’s Day, please register at the Temple in advance.

   Date: 11 am on Feb 14


4. Prayer to avoid Triple Disasters

   According to Korean folk belief, the year of the white tiger is year of triple disasters, especially for the people born in the years of monkey, rat or dragon.
   But we invite disasters by our contaminated mind, not because we encountered year of white tiger. Therefore, we need to pray by ourselves that our right mind will not call for these disasters. Just praying to Buddha or Biddhisattvas to avoid these disasters is not enough. They bring to our attention when we divert to a wrong direction but they do not put us back in the correct direction by force.
   We start prayer at Temple to avoid Three Disasters for you and your family.
   We encourage you to participate in the prayer. Please remove your greed, anger and ignorance out of your mind and extinguish them by help of Buddha and Boddhisattvas.
